One day after giving a live concert, Akemi was approached by a member of the audience, who praised her music and then asked her "nationality." She contemplated for a moment and answered, "Well, if I must come up with something to answer your question, I may be Tokyo tribe."

Akemi says it does not fit with her thinking to categorize people by nationality. Though Japanese folk song is her backbone, she seeks to create music to be shared by people all over the world.

Even among Japanese, individuals have different mentalities, lifestyles, and ways of thinking according to where they are from. So, for Akemi, it is not sufficient to describe her identity as Japanese. Tokyo Tribe is an effort to describe her genuine identity -- not quite Japanese, not quite American. This is inspired by a Native American's comment; asked if he was American or Native American, his answer was neither. He was Navaho tribe.

In addition to Akemi, Tokyo Tribe consists of three musicians: Story, guitarist, Creed de Avanzar, percussionist, and James Hoskins, cellist.
